Reports suggest that Microsoft is considering some important revisions to the Windows 11 user interface, particularly with the functionality of the taskbar and user experience with the Start menu. Leaks indicate that the tech giant is exploring new functionalities that may make the operating system feel more alive and allow for greater customizability, similar to some features of macOS.
Adjustable Taskbar Icons: A Notable Feature to macOS Users
In a report by The Verge, it has come to light that Microsoft is currently working on adding resizable taskbar icons in Windows 11. This feature will allow taskbar icons to shrink depending on the number of open applications or minimized windows. This works similarly to the dock functionality on macOS, where icons resize to accommodate more open applications. For Windows users, this could mean a less cluttered taskbar with access to more applications.
Beta Options: User Testing
According to the report, the testing phase of these resizable taskbar icons is said to be in the latest Insider Preview Beta Builds of Windows 11. During the beta testing phase, users have the opportunity to adjust some scaling options under the Taskbar settings. As per the report, the options include
Always: Taskbar icons will be set permanently to a smaller size.
Never: Taskbar icons will remain at a set size regardless of the number of open applications.
When the taskbar is full, taskbar icons will be reduced in size only when the taskbar is overcrowded.
This dynamic and adaptive feature of “When taskbar is full” maximizes visible screen space and guarantees that all icons can be effectively accessed.
A Redesigned Start Menu: An Overview of Enhanced Functionality.
Apart from working on the taskbar, Microsoft has also been claimed to redesign the Start menu. Reports suggest that the new displayed design will be larger than the one that currently exists o that it can offer a more comprehensive overview of the installed apps for the users.
One of the main changes that has been reported is the ability to disable the “recommended recent apps” section. This change would enable users to view all of their installed applications on one screen, further assisting in application launching as well as overall navigation.
Battery Status Icons: A Temporary Setback
The report has also noted a possible temporary setback for consumers using the Insider Build with these features for the rest of the Windows users. Microsoft appears to have accepted the feedback regarding the battery charge status icons, which were added only this past January, stating that their access may be removed for a while. Rest assured, however, these users will have these icons added back in a future update for Insiders.
A Step Towards Customization and Efficiency
The set of changes that are still being tested shows that Windows 11 is heading in the right direction towards further customization and efficiency by the user. The ability to resize the symbols on the taskbar and the rest of the interface on the Start menu makes it a step towards offering more freedom and control over Windows 11.
