The dimension of gender also played an important role equally with the likelihood of being suspected. As the findings indicate, profiles suggesting male authors were far more likely to be attributed to AI usage than profiles suggesting female authors. There appear to be underlying technology-related stereotypes driving assumptions about one’s need for assistance that are far simpler than for an AI.

Mor Naaman, the Don and Mibs Follett Professor at Cornell Tech and one of the study’s authors, gave additional details on these findings. As Naaman said, “It has been known for some time that the suspiciousness of AI usage led to an overall lower evaluation of trust in AI’s work. Quite the opposite—people are bad at detecting AI usage.” He underscored the negative impact on AI-driven interactions and the inability to discern whether AI tools have been used accurately. Professor Naaman proposed that suspicion’s difference by gender stems from some form of technology stereotypes. Kowe Kadoma shared how the suspicion that some messages and emails could be AI-generated led to casual discussions that eventually prompted an investigation. This made them contemplate what possible reasons could lead to suspicion regarding AI writing and whether people could be differently praised or condemned for employing AI tools, bearing in mind that the benefits and costs of AI use may be extremely unbalanced as social norms shift rapidly as society advances technologically.
