Picture a wireless network that does more than transfer terabytes of data without breaking: it recognizes situations, predicts requirements, and “thinks” much like a human. Virginia Tech researchers have come up with a formulation to integrate more complex AI with wireless technologies and tried to create networks with human-like common sense in a paper published in the Proceedings of the IEEE journal.

The Gap: Advanced AI for Human-Like Reasoning in Wireless Technologies

The paper by Professor Walid Saad, Ph.D. student Omar Hashash, and postdoctoral associate Christo Thomas points to an overlooked problem: AI today does not have enough sophistication for a real wireless revolution. They make the case that the leap beyond 6G is only possible if wireless technology can “think, imagine, and plan” just like humans do.

Saad stated that it will take at least 10 or 15 years to develop a wireless network equipped with artificial general intelligence (AGI) capable of thinking, planning, and imagining. But he insists that the blueprint provides a set of steps toward what can be termed advanced AI.”

6G And Beyond: The New Shift in Thinking

Scrutinizing the goals of 6G, researchers maintain embedding AI within wireless systems will simply not cut it. Their proposal entails a complete shift from tradition—moving away from computer vision-geared AI techniques to developing systems that can perceive and truly engage with the world.

As Hashash stated, “Networks are merging with AI, but the completely smooth unification has not yet been thoroughly explored by many.”

Data-driven AI model implementations face challenges with novel scenarios. There is a lack of reasoning and generalizing capabilities, which, according to researchers, poses a problem for developing reliable, flexible, and resilient wireless networks devoid of common sense reasoning.

The Metaverse as a Driver: Constructing the ‘Telecom Brain’

Metaverse offers a myriad of new possible uses. This technology could help unlock an entirely new dimension for communication networks. As per Hasah’s words, The metaverse offers the possibility to sense the physical reality in real time, and this is vital for the construction of AGI networks.”

These elements can help networks to achieve perception, hyperdimensional world models, planning capabilities, and even analogical reasoning, equipping them with the ability to think like humans. This would essentially form a ‘telecom brain,’ which is capable of adjusting to new problems and is spatially aware while having predictive capabilities.”

Blend of Different Studies: Call for Better Research

To achieve the sought goal, researchers propose blending wireless networks, AI, mathematics, and neurosciences into one multifaceted study framework. “We need to engineer wireless networks that work like they are programmed with skeletal AI understanding the mathematics and physics of the counterparts and the relations,” Thomas said.

That is why these scholars called to treat these disciplines from their cornerstones to build AI that understands and interacts with the rest of reality instead of just simulating the world.

A Win-Win Strategy: Unleashing a New Era

With the addition of intelligence that resembles human thought to wireless networks, researchers believe it is possible to transcend existing barriers and begin a new era of wireless connections. “The missing link is really the wireless network and its components like digital twins, because we can use a twin that exists as a basis for a world model, thereby enabling human-level-like thinking and integrating these ‘thought’ processes in the wireless network,” Saad stated.

This strategy seems to offer an advantage for both the development of wireless networks and that of artificial intelligence, greatly furthering the possibilities of true intelligent networks.
