One of Epic Games’ leading titles, Fortnite, is back on the Apple App Store on the US region after almost five years. The game was pulled off in 2020 for Epic’s implementation of in-house payment options which circumvented the App Store’s 30 percent cut on in-app purchases, which is against their policies.
The legal battle lasting for years came to a noteworthy point when US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers was set to hear Epic’s allegation against Apple for disobeying a prior order on May 27. Epic submitted Fortnite with the required ‘Apple Tax’ and an alternate payment system, but Apple purportedly did not accept the submission. Consequently, Epic sent a letter to the judge asking for help. The judge told Apple that their top brass would be held personally liable if the situation was not solved and, motivated by this, Apple unblocked the submission, allowing Fortnite to be downloaded by all iPhone and iPad users.
Epic Games’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, remarked how the incident rekindled his hopes for an equitable developer platform holder relationship while implying the possibility of more permissive policies from the other app stores.
Microsoft Releases the Source Code for Windows Subsystem for Linux
Microsoft has made a joyous announcement: the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is now open sourced. WSL allows users to use a virtualized version of Arch Linux through Ubuntu since it came with Windows back in 2016. Microsoft was able to change its operating system for WSL to function as a separate module which allowed the open-sourcing this subsystem. To enable this, Android devices are adopting wireless charging standards, with Qi2 being the leader in subsidized magnetic charging. Samsung is rumored to release a Galaxy phone featuring this capability shortly.
Windows 11 Tests Cross Device Resume Feature
At the Build 2025 Conference, Microsoft planned on revealing a new feature for Windows 11 called “Cross Device Resume,” which operates similarly to Apple’s Handoff found on macOS. This feature was planned to be revealed during Microsoft Build 2025. It allows mobile users to effortlessly switch to using their computers for the same session. For instance, if the user is listening to music on Spotify, after pressing a button on the computer’s taskbar, the Windows version launches. A notification shows the program was active on mobile and will continue from where it left off.
Google Translate Set as The Default Option on iOS and iPadOS
As highlighted in the most recent update, users on iOS and iPadOS can now set Google Translate as their defualt translation app. Users can now use Google Translate’s features of translating text, conversations, and even images from within their devices instead of opening a third party app.
The iOS 18.4 updates extend the possibility of setting another app for default function such as translation, media, communication, navigation, browsing, and email which shifts the user experience from passive to active.
The responsiveness of companies to legal frameworks, shift towards open source paradigms, and the enhancement of cross-platform user experience serves as an example for the agility of the technology world.
