One of the world’s leading academic publishers, Springer Nature, has revealed the donation of their proprietary AI-based text detection software to the International Association of Scientific, Technical, and Medical Publishers (STM). ‘They have dedicated themselves to the authorship and ownership of works by best international practices,’ says director of science publishing academic Paul Ayris. For the previous year, parts of text created by artificial intelligence (AI) have been detected by Springer’s AI-based technology with shocking efficiency. This technology partitions each submitted research paper into sections, any of which can be compared against a database of other works for possible plagiarism. In addition, proprietary algorithms work on order, unsupervised coherence checks, and myriad patterns of writing style within each section.

Furthermore, each section is scored, indicating the probability AI technology was utilized, and flagged in the form of color-coded scores, which aid human custodians in flagging documents needing expedited verification for deeper cross-checking. Graf also commented on the reason for the motivation of the sharing: “We are delighted we will now be able to share this technology with the broader publishing community so it can have an even greater impact.”

Saying, “The increase of AI technology has facilitated the spawning of a myriad of fake content by unethical actors,” he specifically spoke, highlighting the rising threat of AI. He further elaborated on the value in harnessing “these instruments that assist in recognizing patterns,” emphasizing the need for sophisticated tools that the publishing industry must adopt in order to safeguard and fortify the integrity of scholarly works.

Springer Nature has augmented the service framework of STM Publishing by integrating the AI tool STM Integrity Hub.
