The University of Portsmouth is welcoming the community for an evening that promises to demonstrate the impact of modern technology on the healthcare and environmental solutions industries. As part of its Life Solved Live series, the institution will host Tracking Motion and Modelling Materials on Wednesday, the 28th of May, 2025, where audiences will be given insights by top industry speakers in digital health and science sustainability.

Taking place in the Eldon Building from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, the attendees will listen to the inaugural lectures of Professors Raymond Lee and Paul Cox, who, through their work, have achieved milestones in clinical and environmental research.

Professor Raymond Lee from the Faculty of Technology will discuss the revolution demanded by wearables and motion tracking devices in healthcare. He will discuss the potential of these devices to measure physical activity and sleep quality, promoting wellness and promoting musculoskeletal health in older age. Lee will also discuss the limitations of consumer technology and its clinical usefulness.

He will also discuss how motion sensors are changing traditional medicine practices, such as using electronic motion capture and computer vision to reduce errors in endoscopy. Lee will also discuss the potential of AI in more sophisticated movement assessment and the revolutionary possibilities of fabric-based sensors as the first step into healthcare wearable devices. He aims to challenge the propaganda surrounding tracking movements in relation to healthcare and explore the reality and hype of this technology.

Creating Optimal Health Outcomes and a Sustainable Planet

Paul Cox, from the Faculty of Science and Health, will deliver a lecture on Better by Design: Modelling Materials for Healthcare and Environmental Applications. The lecture will explore the role of computer modeling in decoding and designing complex biological and chemical systems for human health and the environment. Cox will discuss the use of zeolitic materials, which have numerous applications due to their pores and channels, in drug delivery devices.

This precision medicine approach offers patients more tailored treatment regimens, lower side effects, and reduced medication usage. Cox will also discuss the advancement of computational techniques in pharmaceutical exploration and development, highlighting how modeling has been instrumental in discovering new drugs. He will also discuss environmental science, highlighting how biological enzymes that degrade plastics are being studied using computer simulations. Cox emphasized that modeling can help design more efficient and advanced catalysts.
