CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — November 9, 2025 — Apple is reportedly working on a new generation of satellite-based features that will extend iPhone functionality far beyond emergency communications. The enhancements will allow users to navigate maps, share photos, and connect via 5G satellites without depending on Wi-Fi or cellular networks.
Apple Plans to Broaden Satellite Connectivity for iPhones
According to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, Apple is developing multiple new capabilities that leverage satellite technology. These include satellite navigation in Apple Maps, photo sharing through Messages, 5G satellite connectivity, and a dedicated API for third-party developers.
At present, iPhones offer limited satellite functions, such as Emergency SOS, Find My tracking, basic text messaging, and roadside assistance. The new system under development will significantly expand these capabilities, enabling continuous connectivity even in remote regions.
Key Features Under Development
Insiders have revealed at least five new features being tested for future iPhones:
- Apple Maps via Satellite: Enables navigation without Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Photo Sharing in Messages: Allows users to send images via satellite connections.
- Natural Usage: Maintains signal indoors without needing to point the device skyward.
- Satellite over 5G: Uses Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology for wider coverage.
- Satellite API for Developers: Opens satellite access to app creators, expanding third-party integrations.

Collaboration with SpaceX and T-Mobile Expands Coverage
Apple has reportedly partnered with SpaceX and T-Mobile to support Starlink-powered satellite connectivity. The collaboration aims to bring seamless satellite coverage to future iPhone models running iOS 18.3 and later. Early testing is already underway through the T-Mobile Starlink beta program in the United States.
These partnerships will allow Apple to extend its reach to rural and remote users, strengthening its global communications ecosystem.
Future iPhone Models May Include 5G Satellite Support
According to reports from The Information, Apple plans to introduce satellite-based 5G connectivity beginning with the iPhone 18 Pro, expected to launch next year. This feature will enhance network resilience in areas with weak or no cellular signals.
Industry observers note that this move aligns with Apple’s long-term strategy to build a self-sufficient ecosystem capable of operating independently from terrestrial carriers.
Hybrid Model for Future Satellite Services
While Apple’s existing satellite services are currently free, industry analysts suggest that future advanced features may adopt a hybrid payment model. Core services such as emergency messaging would remain free, while premium functions—like high-resolution data transfer or persistent coverage—could involve subscription fees or direct payments to satellite operators such as Globalstar, Apple’s current partner.
Gurman’s report also notes that Apple explored launching its own satellite network but ultimately decided against becoming a full telecommunications provider, preferring to maintain control through partnerships.
Limitations and Long-Term Outlook
For now, Apple does not plan to enable voice calls, video calls, or web browsing via satellite. However, analysts believe these functions could become feasible as network capacity and satellite infrastructure continue to expand over the next few years.
