A political activist has publically displayed Nazi symbols which Taiwan’s Government, specifically the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), has condemned. In addition, the event brought up an ongoing discussion regarding the politically charged atmosphere in Taiwan.
An Attention-Grabbing Display: Nazi Armband and Salute
This controversy began on Tuesday after Sung Chien-liang, who spearheaded a Kuomintang-backed effort to recall DPP party MP, showed up at the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office. At the office, he performed in front of the press while clad in some form of Nazi dress showing off a Nazi armband alongside constant performances of the Nazi salute. He created immeasurable and unexpected fury.
MOFA’s Reaction: Forceful Condemnation with Background Information
MOFA, in a statement published on Wednesday, expressed they strongly condemning Sung’s actions. Furthermore, they declared the ministry “Nazi-related symbols and flags are detested and spurned by most countries, including Taiwan excluding Taiwan.” This statement was accompanied by the need to explain Nazi signs and why they should not be used. Offensive acts such as these are announced at international gatherings where heads of state meet from across the globe.
The Allegations: Recall Vote Campaign Irregularities
As in other cases, Sung Chien-liang is accused of participating in some sort of signature fraud in relation with a recall vote campaign attempting to oust DPP legislator Lee Kuen-cheng. Prosecutors claimed that Sung was set free on bail of NT$80,000 (US$2,463) after being interrogated.
Balancing Free Speech with Responsibility: MOFA’s Stance
Video footage of the press conference reveals that Sung was not the only civil servant present who did not escape criticism. The minister highlighted Taiwan’s recognition of freedom of speech which without a doubt, is guaranteed by the constitution. Contrary to that, MOFA also pointed out the need to observe the “historical trauma associated with Nazi symbols and gestures.” The ministry called out Taiwanese citizens to provide “understanding and empathy towards diverse cultures, religions and ethnic groups across the globe” and called for unison towards “building a better and more inclusive future.”
German Institute Taipei’s Reaction: Gratitude for Support
Aside from expressing gratitude, the German Institute Taipei also reacted to the incident, thanking the public for their outrage against Sung. In a Facebook post they made on Wednesday, they voiced their appreciation for the backing and solidarity that was extended towards countering the disrespectful act.

It is an attempt to underscore how painful the effects of Nazi ideology remain. One can exercise freedom of expression, but there are limitations which include consideration of symbols and gestures of history.
