Nvidia Urges Europe to Build AI Infrastructure and Compete Globally

LISBON, Portugal — November 11, 2025 — A senior executive from Nvidia has called on Europe to accelerate its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure to compete with the United States and China. Speaking at the Web Summit technology conference, the chipmaker emphasized that Europe’s potential in AI will depend on its ability to scale advanced computing and energy capacity.

Europe Must Strengthen Foundations for AI Growth

Rev Lebaredian, Nvidia’s Vice President of Omniverse and Simulation Technology, said Europe risks falling behind in the global AI race unless it builds the “foundational infrastructure” required for next-generation innovation.

“Without the AI factories and without the energy to power them, it won’t matter how much talent is available here,” Lebaredian said. “But if Europe chooses to act, it can become a global leader in AI and computer science.”

He stressed that Europe’s strength lies in its academic talent and research institutions, but warned that talent alone will not be enough without massive infrastructure investments.

EU Expands AI Factory Initiative to Boost Competitiveness

Lebaredian’s comments follow the European Commission’s announcement last month that it would add several AI factories, bringing the total to 19 across the bloc. These facilities will serve as data centers dedicated to producing and training AI models at scale.

The expansion is part of Europe’s broader digital competitiveness agenda aimed at reducing dependence on U.S. and Asian technology providers. EU policymakers believe this initiative will lay the groundwork for a sustainable AI ecosystem and support emerging European AI startups.

Energy Costs Pose Major Challenge to AI Expansion

However, Lebaredian cautioned that Europe faces significant hurdles due to high energy prices, which remain elevated compared to global averages. “Energy is more expensive here than anywhere else, and that limits how fast AI can grow,” he said.

He urged policymakers to address energy efficiency and grid capacity issues, noting that AI computing demands immense power to train advanced models like large language systems and industrial simulators.

Europe’s Opportunity to Lead in Sustainable AI

Despite the challenges, Nvidia believes Europe has a unique opportunity to become a leader in sustainable AI infrastructure. The region’s ongoing investments in renewable energy and data center regulation could allow it to pioneer a model for low-carbon AI production.

“Europe has the values, the vision, and the expertise,” Lebaredian noted. “What it needs now is commitment—to invest in the hardware and power that turn innovation into global impact.”

Nvidia’s Expanding Global Role in AI Development

Nvidia continues to play a central role in global AI innovation through its GPU computing platforms, which power systems from cloud providers, research labs, and enterprises worldwide. The company’s hardware and software ecosystems underpin breakthroughs in machine learning, robotics, and digital twins.

Industry analysts say Nvidia’s message to Europe reflects growing concern about regional imbalances in AI investment. While U.S. and Chinese firms lead in AI infrastructure spending, Europe’s progress has been slowed by regulatory constraints and fragmented policy coordination.

A Call for Action Across Europe’s Tech Sector

Lebaredian concluded by encouraging European governments and private institutions to collaborate more closely on building AI capacity. “Europe should be a center for AI, computer science, and all technology,” he said. “But it has to participate fully if it wants to shape the next generation of global innovation.”
